‘Into the Meadow’
This artwork was created for Firefly, my first collaboration with writer Robert Macfarlane.
Into the Meadow is a key artwork within the book, a turning point in which our young protagonist takes hold of the light around her and strides through the dark.
To celebrate the upcoming release of Firefly, I’m printing 30 original etchings of Into the Meadow.
This artwork holds great significance. This etching was printed in the middle of the night, when I was most definitely far too emotional to handle a failed print. I sleepily inked up the copper plate, rolled it through the press and, thankfully, the print was perfect first time. I was both elated and relieved as I shut down my studio, crept into my own home, and finally got some sleep.
The etching appears at the halfway point in the book, it really was a turning point not just in the story, but for me in creating the artworks. I fell asleep that night feeling, perhaps... perhaps I could do this. I knew I wanted to select an artwork from the book to release, and I knew immediately which one it would be.
Each etching has been created entirely by hand, using traditional methods with no digital interference whatsoever. Every line and texture comes from countless hours at plate and press, each mark a small act of patience and care. In a world that so often moves away from the human touch, this feels like something worth holding on to.
This artwork represents not just the story itself, but the journey of making it, the long hours, the support from those closest to me, and the quiet persistence it takes to bring something like this into being.
Working alongside Robert Macfarlane has been an incredible experience, a dream I once only imagined, now realised through this collaboration. Together with Magic Cat Publishing, we’ve created Firefly, the first book in our Night Creatures trilogy, a celebration of nature, wonder, and light in the dark.
