Luke Adam Hawker makes art and tells stories through etchings, drawings and books. Inspired by the places, people and natural world around him, observation, curiosity and connection run throughout his practice as an artist, printmaker and author.

The Artist

I began my career as an artist in 2015, selling limited-edition prints at markets across London. What started with a table, a collection of drawings and the hope that they might connect with someone has grown into a career that has taken me in directions I could never have imagined.

Much of my work begins with looking closely, slowing down and finding meaning in the places, people and natural world around us. Whether I’m working on a copper plate, drawing on location or developing a story for a book, I hope to create something that invites others to pause, look again and perhaps notice what might otherwise have gone unseen.

Today, etching has become an increasingly important part of my work. I love its slowness and unpredictability: the process of drawing into a plate, working with the ink and eventually pulling a print from the press. Each month, I release a small collection of new etchings, allowing me to continually explore new ideas while creating limited-edition work for people to collect.

Nature has always found its way into my work, but becoming a father has deepened that relationship. My children have reminded me of the wonder that can be found in the smallest things — a tree, a changing season — and of the importance of remaining curious about the world around us. I’m also proud to be an ambassador for the Woodland Trust, supporting its work to protect and restore the UK’s woods and trees.

Storytelling has become another important part of my life as an artist. In 2021, I published my first book, Together, a story about connection, hope and our shared experience of an extraordinary moment in time. It became a Sunday Times bestseller and has since found readers around the world.

That was followed by The Last Tree: A Seed of Hope, a fable exploring our relationship with trees and imagining a world without them. Since then, I’ve continued to explore storytelling through words and images, including the Night Creatures trilogy, To Those Who Speak and The Tree Zodiac.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with organisations including the National Trust, The Crown Estate, Highgrove, Soho House and Penhaligon’s. My original work has also found its way into collections including the Parliamentary Art Collection and The Crown Estate.
